Girls triumph in Sutton Borough Round of “The Danone Nations Cup”
Have progressed through to the next round to represent Sutton in the Surrey County Finals in January.
Having only had a girls’ football team for just over a year, they have gone and done the unthinkable by winning themselves a place in the Surrey County Finals Round as the Sutton Borough representatives.
Kicking off the 6 team tournament with a 7-0 victory in their first game, the next two games saw Rushy Meadow dominate but only record slim 1-0 wins.
Going 2-0 up in the fourth game, Rushy looked to have sewn the game up, but in a nervy last few minutes which saw Rushy concede their first goal in 4 games they held on to record a score of 2-1.
The final game became their toughest challenge so far as the opposition, having only lost one out of their four games, knew that a victory for them would possible see the competition decided on goal difference. The game was finally decided in the dying seconds as a final Rushy attack resulted in them taking the lead. With barely time to kick off the referee blew the final whistle. 1 -0 They had done it!!!
Celebrating with the girls afterwards, a jubilant and proud Mr Henry said “These girls have been absolutely outstanding today. Halfway through, I told the girls that by winning their first three games they had earned the right to start believing that they could win the whole thing. Before the final game I reminded them that whatever the result they should be proud of what they had achieved here.”
The next round will be held in Guilford in January.
